Our verdict
YES, BOTH
Link a foreign card; cash must still be accepted
The short answer
Yes. Both Alipay and WeChat Pay let visitors link a foreign card and pay by QR code. WeChat Pay says you don't need a Chinese (+86) number and charges nothing on payments of ¥200 or less, 3% above that. Alipay does not publish its fee. By law, cash must still be accepted.
| Chinese phone number | Not needed for WeChat Pay; any number that gets texts |
|---|---|
| Cards, WeChat Pay | Visa, Mastercard, Amex, JCB, Diners Club, Discover, UnionPay |
| Cards, Alipay | Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Diners Club, Discover on its visitor page |
| WeChat Pay fee | None up to ¥200 a payment; 3% above |
| Cash | Legal tender; refusing it is against the rules |

Alipay vs WeChat Pay, from their own pages
Each row says only what that platform's official visitor guide or user manual says. Where a platform says nothing, we say so rather than borrow the other's rule.[1][2][3]

| Official visitor guide | Alipay+ “Pay in the Chinese mainland” | “Guide to Add and Use International Cards with Weixin Pay” |
| Phone number | Sign up with your mobile number; country code chosen in the app | No +86 number needed, as long as it can receive texts |
| Identity | Choose the country or region on your ID, then add a card | Passport; you are notified if a passport copy is needed |
| Card networks | 5 shown: Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Diners Club, Discover | 7: Visa, Mastercard, Amex, JCB, Diners Club, Discover, UnionPay |
| Fee on foreign cards | Not stated on its visitor page | Free up to ¥200 a payment; 3% above |

Set up WeChat Pay
From WeChat's English guide and WeChat Pay's user manual (updated 12 June 2026). Do it at home, where you can receive the text message.[2][3][4]
- 1
Install and register
Download or update WeChat and register with your phone number. A non-Chinese number works if it can receive texts.
- 2
Open the wallet
Tap Me → Pay and Services → Wallet. If you registered with a foreign number and see no Pay and Services page, go to Me → Settings → General → Accessibility and turn on Weixin Pay.
- 3
Add your card
In Wallet, tap Bank Cards → Add a Bank Card, agree to the terms and fill in your identity details as prompted.
- A card issued outside mainland China with a UnionPay logo counts as UnionPay International: choose UnionPay as the card type.
- Up to 3 foreign cards per account; one card can be linked to at most 2 WeChat accounts.
- 4
Upload your passport if asked
If you verify with a passport, WeChat notifies you when it needs a copy: a photo of the passport and a photo of you holding it. Review takes about one working day; the result arrives from the WeChat Pay official account.
- 5
Pay
Scan the merchant's QR code, or show your payment code to be scanned.
Set up Alipay
Alipay's visitor page is shorter on detail; the app guides you through the rest.[1]
- 1
Install Alipay
Download Alipay and choose the international version when you log in.
- 2
Register
Enter your mobile number with its country code, tap Next and follow the prompts.
- 3
Add your card
Select the country or region on your ID, then add your international bank card.
- 4
Pay
Scan or show a QR code in shops, taxis, buses and the metro, or book flights and hotels in the app.
Which cards each app accepts
WeChat Pay lists its networks in its user manual; Alipay shows logos on its visitor page. Each app says the add-card screen is final.[1][3]
| Card network | WeChat Pay | Alipay |
|---|---|---|
| Visa | Yes | Yes |
| Mastercard | Yes | Yes |
| American Express | Yes | Not on visitor page |
| JCB | Yes | Yes |
| Diners Club | Yes | Yes |
| Discover | Yes | Yes |
| UnionPay, issued outside mainland China | Yes | Not on visitor page |
WeChat Pay cannot link single-brand foreign-currency cards issued by mainland Chinese banks. “Not on visitor page” means Alipay's page doesn't show it, not that it is refused: try it on the add-card screen.
WeChat Pay spending limits on foreign cards
WeChat publishes two sets of figures: one in its English visitor guide, and tiers by verification level in its Chinese user manual. It does not explain how they relate on one page. Your limit appears in the app when you pay.[2][3]
| Where it's stated | Per payment | Per period |
|---|---|---|
| English visitor guide | ¥6,500 | ¥50,000 a month; ¥65,000 a year |
| Manual: basic sign-up, no ID uploaded | ¥3,000 | ¥15,000 a year |
| Manual: after uploading your passport | ¥35,000 (also per day) | ¥350,000 a year |
WeChat Pay says it sets these limits by risk and, for basic sign-ups, at the regulator's request. Alipay publishes no limit figures on its visitor page.
When WeChat Pay asks for your passport
WeChat Pay's verification manual lists four triggers for uploading an ID copy:
- A single payment of ¥10,000 or more.
- ¥50,000 or more in or out across all your accounts within 30 days.
- Balance above ¥5,000 for 10 days in a row.
- Buying a wealth product such as Licaitong or Lingqiantong.
For foreign-card users, WeChat Pay's terms ask for your name, ID number and expiry, card number, sex, nationality, contact details, occupation and address, plus a photo of the ID and a photo of you holding it. Alipay's visitor page gives no trigger amounts.
Other ways to pay
Your bank card itself. UnionPay International says more than 27 million merchants and 1.1 million ATMs in mainland China accept UnionPay cards.
Your home wallet. Through Alipay+, some overseas wallets pay at Chinese merchants directly, among them AlipayHK, Kakao Pay, TrueMoney, GCash and PayPay. Alipay+ notes that each wallet may set its own limits. Tencent says 36 overseas wallets now work with WeChat Pay QR codes, and PayPal users in the United States are the first to scan them through PayPal.
Apple Pay with a foreign card. We found no official page confirming it works in mainland China, so we don't recommend relying on it.[1][6][10]
What we could not confirm
- Alipay's fee and spending limits for foreign cards: not on its visitor page.
- Whether Alipay currently accepts American Express and UnionPay International cards.
- How WeChat's English-guide limits relate to the tiers in its Chinese manual.
- Which country codes each app accepts: neither publishes a list.
- WeChat's Chinese-language visitor guide: blocked by a security check when we tried to read it.
- Apple Pay with a foreign card in mainland China.
Watch out for
- The “$5,000 per transaction, $50,000 a year” limit quoted online is the annual foreign-exchange quota for Chinese residents, not a limit on visitors' cards.
- A foreign card in WeChat Pay can't send red packets or transfers, so you can't split a bill with a friend that way.
- Set up and test at home: verification can take a working day, and you need to receive a text.
Questions readers ask
Do I need a Chinese phone number for WeChat Pay?
No. WeChat says you can use your international number as long as it can receive SMS verification codes.
Is there a fee for using a foreign card in WeChat Pay?
No fee on payments of ¥200 or less; 3% of the payment above ¥200. Fees are refunded in proportion if you get a refund. Tencent also runs a first-time promotion waiving fees on up to ¥1,000 a day for 90 days.
What does Alipay charge on foreign cards?
Alipay's visitor page does not state a rate. Check the amount on the payment screen before you confirm.
Does Alipay accept American Express?
Alipay's visitor page shows Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Diners Club and Discover, not Amex. Try it on the add-card screen; WeChat Pay does list Amex.
Can shops in China refuse cash?
No. People's Bank of China rules in force since 1 February 2026 forbid refusing cash or treating cash payers differently, and taxis must accept cash. You can complain to the local PBC branch.
Do I need a Chinese bank account?
No. Both apps let visitors link a card issued outside mainland China.
